Michael Turner

A dedicated and accomplished educational leader with over two decades of experience and a proven track record as a turnaround expert, Michael Turner began his tenure as Superintendent of Bessemer City Schools on Tuesday, April 1, 2025. Known for his strategic approach and collaborative spirit, Turner is committed to leading the Bessemer City School district out of state intervention through a strong partnership with Alabama education officials, embodying the district's motto, "Believe in Bessemer."

A Tulsa, Okla. native, Turner brings a wealth of experience in Alabama's educational landscape, having previously served with distinction as a principal in two Alabama districts for a combined 23 years.

He expressed his enthusiasm for his new role, stating, "I'm incredibly excited about this opportunity. I truly believe in Bessemer and what we can accomplish together. I'm looking forward to getting out into schools, getting out into the community, shaking hands, really hearing from the people."

Turner's educational foundation is rooted in Alabama's public school system. He earned his Bachelor of Science degree in Social Studies from Miles College (‘96) in Fairfield, Ala., followed by a Master of Education degree in Educational Administration and an Educational Specialist degree in Educational Leadership, both from Jacksonville State University in Jacksonville, Ala.

Viewing the state intervention as an opportunity for collaboration rather than an obstacle, Turner emphasizes a unified approach. "It's a partnership where we partner together," he stated. "My goal is to align the core values of the Alabama State Department of Education with those of Bessemer City Schools, ensuring a seamless and effective process."

A primary focus for Superintendent Turner is the academic improvement of Bessemer City Schools. Acknowledging the district's progress, he has set an ambitious goal to elevate their academic performance significantly, emphasizing the critical roles of teacher efficacy and consistent progress monitoring. In his initial 100 days, Turner is prioritizing active listening to all stakeholders, including teachers, administrators, staff, community leaders, and school board members, to inform his strategic direction.

Prior to his appointment in Bessemer, Turner served as Principal of Pinson Valley High School for ten years. During his tenure, he spearheaded initiatives that dramatically improved student outcomes, including an increase in the graduation rate from 89% to 96% and a significant rise in students earning a College and Career Indicator. He also championed the implementation of comprehensive Career Tech programs and oversaw the school's remarkable improvement in the state's A-F Report Card.

Before leading Pinson Valley High School, Turner demonstrated exceptional leadership as Principal of Leeds High School for thirteen years. There, he secured the A+ College Ready Grant, significantly raised graduation rates, successfully continued the AVID program, and oversaw a positive SACS/AdvancEd Accreditation. He also served as Principal of Leeds Middle School, implementing key programs like AVID and the Bridge Program. Earlier in his career, Turner served as an Assistant Principal and History Teacher at Leeds High School, and as a History Teacher at Minor High School and Fairfield High School. He also gained valuable experience as the Community Center Director for Partners in Neighborhood Growth in Birmingham, AL.

Expressing a commitment to long-term leadership in Bessemer, Turner is dedicated to fostering an environment where "the focus should be on what is best for students, and all other concerns should be secondary."

Tiger Council Participants and Superintendent

Superintendent's Tiger Council, consists of 3rd -5th Grade (Tiny Tiger Council) and 6th -12th (Tiger Council)

The purpose of the Council is to:

Direct Student Input: Students can share their thoughts, concerns, and feedback directly with the superintendent. This helps ensure that decisions reflect the needs and interests of students.
Developing Leadership Skills: Participating students gain leadership experience and learn skills like problem-solving, communication, and collaboration. It's an opportunity to engage in school policy and community-building actively.
Bridging the Gap: Often, students and administration may feel disconnected. An advisory council helps bridge this gap, fostering mutual understanding and trust between students and school leadership.
Feedback on School Programs and Policies: Students provide firsthand insights into how policies and programs impact them, allowing the administration to make adjustments that better serve their needs.
Promoting a Positive School Culture: When students feel heard, they are more likely to feel valued and respected, leading to a more inclusive, supportive school environment.
