BESSEMER, Ala. — Bessemer City Schools is implementing a new wireless device policy for the 2025-2026 school year, aligning with the Alabama Legislature's FOCUS Act.

The policy, enacted by the Alabama Legislature as Act 2025-386, aims to create a more focused learning environment by prohibiting the use of wireless communication devices (WCDs) during the instructional day.

Starting this academic year, students are permitted to bring WCDs to school but must turn them off and store them in an approved location, such as a locker or car, for the entire instructional day. Devices will not be allowed during breaks, lunch, class changes, or class time. Students will not be allowed to leave class to store a device. Included in this policy are devices such as cellphones, smartwatches, pagers, laptops, tablets and wireless headphones. The new guidelines are designed to reduce classroom distractions and enhance student engagement in academic activities.

"Our goal is to ensure a dedicated and distraction-free learning environment for all students," said Michael Turner, Superintendent of Bessemer City Schools. "This policy supports our commitment to academic excellence and student well-being, while also complying with state law."

The district will not be responsible for any lost, stolen, or damaged devices brought onto school property. In case of an emergency, parents and guardians should contact the school's front office directly, and staff will ensure messages are delivered promptly. Students needing to contact a parent can use a designated school phone.

Additionally, the district will provide a mandatory social media and online safety course for all students, a requirement of the FOCUS Act, to promote responsible digital citizenship. Violations of the wireless device policy will be addressed through the Bessemer City Schools Code of Student Conduct, with consequences ranging from device confiscation to suspension for repeat offenses.

The new policy, adopted on June 30, 2025, will be communicated to students, staff, and families through various district channels and is available on the Bessemer City Schools website.
